Project Description:
Pierre-de-Coubertin Stadium is located directly on Lake Vidy, in Lausanne. In order to host the annual Athletissima event, a competition has been organized to offer an extension of the stadium seating capacity in the form of mobile stands as well as a light & modular coverage.
The work on topography is the major architectural element. The slope, associated with the elevation gain, participates with the two mobile roofs in creating a window on the lake. Local residents will use the stadium on a daily basis, thanks to the simplicity and porosity offered by this generic and flexible public space. During major events, the set up of the modular roofs will open the stadium to major international meetings such as the Athletissima.
Welcoming, open and spectacular during these competitions, the stadium will nevertheless maintain a human and discreet scale in daily use. The reworked topography, will allow the creation of new paths that, from north to south, will lead walkers to the lake to which the vanishing points converge. During the Athletissima, this horizon will be transformed thanks to the two roofs and the movable tiers which will highlight the spectacle offered by the athletes.
The Stadium will be integrated in a light and subtle way in a green, bucolic and dense environment. The surface of the new stadium will be lowered by 1.2 meters from its current state, to reconnect the stadium to the boardwalk that reaches the edge of the lake.
