Project Description:
The new Fällanden kindergarten is a welcoming building built of wood. The concept of the new building is based on a compact and centralized structure, with seven kindergartens and four day-care centers. In placing the stairs and hallways on the outside, the building is cost effective and very flexible to use. The four oriented staircases respond to site access and create an optimal network for the users. The day-care center for older children, is located on the ground floor, and acts as a protective layer towards the kindergarten which is located upstairs.
Two entrance halls provide access to the building and contain locker rooms. They connect the north and south outdoor spaces and thus guarantee an essential permeability to the educational building. The two-storey building integrates into its surrounding fabric and is quiet and discreet. Its access can be done via both facades. Access to kindergartens and daycares is individualized. The Engawa architectural concept refers to intermediate transition spaces in Japanese. Here they are located between the interior of the building and the gardens. From an architectural point of view, these spaces are intended to be an intermediate zone and can not be allocated either to indoors or outdoors. The generous and open balcony space is ambiguous: it allows different uses and is at the same time bearer of architectural identity. This intermediate zone can be assigned to the indoor or outdoor area depending on the season and its use adds value to the required space program.
The new building stands out from the traditional typology of the school building, and therefore has no corridors. Interior traffic areas are minimized to the locker rooms. These arrival and departure spaces also include all secondary facilities such as toilets and storage.
