The existing land having no free space in the ground or planted, the project provides for the creation of a garden of about 50 m². This green space consitutes the foot of the atrium that brings light and natural ventilation to this large volume around which the circulations of the movie theater revolve. This empty space, inspired by the existing void on the three top levels is extended to the basement level. It brings natural light to the offices that revolve around it.
The project is located in one of the plots built at the end of the 19th century near the Palais Garnier. The arrangement of the façades with its street-level shop register and massive cut stone form a remarkable ensemble of the Parisian landscape. The project aims to integrate in a respectful and contemporary way in this urban ensemble. Along the Grands Boulevards, the restored dome of the cinema plays more than ever its role of urban signal.
At levels 1, 2 and 3, the street portion is dedicated to the offices while the inner part of the parcel is dedicated to the movie theaters. The latter are also deployed in the below grade levels to reach a capacity of 1200 seats.
At levels 4 and 5 the entire floor surface is occupied by offices, future headquarters of the Pathé company. Terraces are laid out at these levels in places that are made inconstructible by the rules contained in the Paris local development plan (PLU).
At Level 5, a small ellipsoidal shaped screening room dedicated to Pathé’s internal work and private screenings is mounted on jacks and will be mobile between floors. A 7 meters translation will allow the spectators to have a frontal view on the dome of the opera Garnier.
At the roof level, the project plans to treat the roofs of the building to make them accessible by Pathé’s workers. A new wooden deck, slightly elevated from the existing zinc roof, will be installed like a light floating carpet, while being invisible from the street. It will offer a panoramic view of the Opera Garnier and the Parisian rooftops.
